One Piece Card Game

This project was made for 3 key reasons:
1. Improve as a designer. If you love something, you’ll spend all your time doing it, and this Trading Card Game is a piece that came from this level of passion.
2. Make an actual working game with original mechanics. I’m still in the process of doing this (currently on Prototype Version 2.0). However, the design itself is finished, so it’s ready for showcase.
3. I love One Piece and Card Games. It was only natural.
Without getting into mechanics, for now, here’s the design concept. Above you can see the regular cards, which vary in power. For this game I wanted the art to overshadow the text, so I decided on illustrations (which I took from Pinterest, and the official colored and B&W Manga) that wouldn’t be bound by frames and boarders. The attacks and descriptions are always contained in the colored rectangle.
Each card has a manga page for texture in the background, and each character art has a colored silhouette to add visual interest to the card.
Above are the Ultimate Cards. Since they are stronger, I wanted them to be as bold as possible, always showing the character defeating an enemy and looking awesome. The diamond-like background helps in conveying how special it is, and the repetition of “Ultimate Card” as a vertical strip, creates this quasi-holographic effect when juxtaposed against the illustrations.
It’s easier to notice some details in the digital versions, as seen above.
For the King Cards I designed a sophisticated gold background for them to feel luxurious and clean. The other elements are the same as the Ultimate Card. And last, but not least, are the Beast Cards. These are different, because I needed to convey the savage, primal personality of characters like Kaido (the dragon). For that I made use of rocks, leaves, muted greens, and vines.
